GJ's Berguin awarded scholarship from Western Colorado Golf Foundation

Brittany Berguin never looked at golf as an end to a means.

The four-year varsity player for Grand Junction High School merely saw golf as a game to appreciate.

“You just have to understand how great a game it is and how respectable it is,” she said.

As it turns out, the game has given her something else.

Berguin is one of two Western Slope high school golfers selected as recipients of this year’s Western Colorado Golf Foundation platinum scholarship, its highest level. The foundation announced its nine scholarship recipients from the Class of 2008 last week.

The WCGF has been awarding college scholarships for eight years. Over that time it has given out $128,500 in scholarship money.

The scholarship is available to graduating seniors who have played varsity golf at any high school in western Colorado.

Joining Berguin on the list of platinum scholars this year is Meghan Innes of Moffat County High School in Craig.

Both will receive scholarships worth $1,250, renewable for four years.

“That’s a pretty sweet deal,” Berguin said.

Berguin plans to attend the University of Arizona and major in biology. Eventually she would like to attend medical school.

“I think I want to be a dermatologist,” she said.

Two students received gold-level scholarships this year — Christina Doerer of Delta and Tessa Sullivan of Montrose. Gold scholarships are worth $750.

Earning $500 silver scholarships were James Knous of Basalt, Jason Whiting of Glenwood Springs, Connor Rakowski of Carbondale (a Basalt student), Whitney Brofos of Fruita Monument and Shelby Masse-Samento of Grand Junction.

The nine scholars from the Class of 2008 join 23 current college students whose scholarships will be renewed for the 2008-09 school year.
